Cambridgeshire Learning Disability Parliament
As a response to the evidence of abuse at Winterbourne View Care Home (details below) earlier this year the Cambridgeshire Learning Disability Parliament decided to hold a meeting on the topic of Abuse. In the lead up to the meeting we delivered county wide consultation to people with learning disabilities. The learning disabled MPs (more information on them and the project below) also participated in some group work on the day and identified the following key areas of work needed across the county. Please find minutes of our meeting including the results of our consultation enclosed/attached.
Day Services and Social Training Enterprise engagement
Members of the groups who had received safeguarding training run by Cambridgeshire County Council’s Adult Safeguarding Training Team reported that this was very beneficial and a good educational tool. The need for regular educational work on the topic of safeguarding and keeping safe was clear, and the group work participants agreed that regular educational workshops for service users would be ideal. However, it was evident such training had not been received by all members and that some services were not taking up the opportunity of this free training and its associated resources.
We would like to request that the commissioners of the different LDP services ensure that educating users about safeguarding and keeping safe issues becomes mandatory. We suggest that this requirement is included in future contracts and in turn is part of contract monitoring in Day Services, Social Enterprises and residential and supported living settings. Both Amanda Roach and Ken Fairburn attended the meeting so perhaps they, along with the LDP commissioners, could take the lead here.
